Acupuncture is a complete system of medicine based on principals which have been used in the Orient for the last 3000 years. Today, Acupuncture is used by one-third of the world’s population, and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization. Researchers indicate that patients of this ancient art are healthier with more stamina and vitality, rebound more quickly from illness and surgery, take fewer sick days form work, do not need as many medications, in some cases, avoid expensive surgery or other medical treatments. In addition, patients of this technique feel a lot better, both physically and emotionally.

                          How does it work?

Acupuncture at Chagrin Valley Wellness Center Cleveland, Ohio
Oriental medicine is based on the vital life force that flows through all living things. It is what created the body originally and continues to keep it alive and functioning properly. Known as “Qi” (pronounced chee) this energy travels along various pathways in the body called “meridians”. When the balance of energy is disturbed, pain or illness result. In addition, disease manifests and is not cured when this life force becomes weakened to such an extent that it can no longer heal. Acupuncture corrects this energetic imbalance, encouraging the body’s natural healing capacity. Restoring balance and energy causes symptoms to be alleviated.  Keep in mind that it will take 4-6 visits to determine an opinion on results.

What can be successfully treated through acupuncture?

The most common treated ailments include: back pain, headache, allergies, arthritis, and chronic fatigue. The World Health Organization recognizes Acupuncture and Traditional Oriental Medicine’s effectiveness in treating over 43 common disorders, such as:

Gastrointestinal Disorders - Gynecological Disorders -
Urogenital Disorders - Respiratory Disorders -
Disorders of the Bones, Muscles, Joints and Nervous System -
Circulatory Disorders - Emotional Disorders -
                          Psychological Disorders - Addictions -
Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders -
Supportive Therapy for other chronic disorders

                          What’s involved in a treatment?

Your practitioner will assess your condition with a thorough examination. This includes your medical history, current symptoms, diet and lifestyle, as well as pulse and tongue evaluation. Oriental medicine has developed a system for determining the quality and mobility of life energy in each person. It involves the palpation of six pulses on each wrist, tongue diagnosis and body palpation. By means of the pulse diagnosis the practitioner can determine which organ systems are too weak or too strong and can also monitor the effects of treatment. The acupuncturist places extremely fine, hair-thin, flexible needles at specific points on the energetic pathways (meridians) leading to organs, muscles and nerves. Each point has a unique effect on the energy passing through it. Most people experience an achy or tingling sensation when needles are inserted and are often surprised to find their treatments are quite relaxing.

                          How safe is Acupuncture?

In the hands of a comprehensively trained Acupuncturist your safety is assured. Modern Acupuncturists use only sterilized, individually packaged, disposable needles.

                          Q & A
                          with Allison Bower, L.AC., M.AC
                          .

Q- What can Acupuncture help me with?
A- Acupuncture can help with a broad scope of problems and complaints.  People seek acupuncture for reasons including: pain, fatigue, stress anxiety, infertility, pms, injury, headaches, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, autoimmune disorders, allergies, tinnitus, skin disorders, asthma, bladder control, sleep disorders and many, many more.  Acupuncture can treat a huge number of ailments, symptoms, side effects of disorders and medications as well as mental and emotional complaints.
Q- What can I expect from my first acupuncture treatment? Subsequent treatments?
                          A-
Your first acupuncture appointment is a 90 minute diagnostic/treatment.  I will inquire into your main "complaint" and a variety of other health history questions.  I will also conduct a physical evaluation that includes pulse, abdominal and tongue diagnosis.  In this process, I am forming a complete picture of where the imbalance lies within you.
For effective results, a minimum of 4-6 treatments spaced a week apart generally lasting no longer than 60 minutes should be expected.  The amount of treatments an individual needs varies tremendously.  Some ailments are long standing and chronic, while others are acute and require less intervention.
Q- What do I have to do during, or before the session to maximize my results?
A- You should make sure you have eaten something the day of treatment.  Also:
                             * Avoid caffeine and cigarettes at least one hour before your appointment.
                             * Do not brush your tongue the morning of treatment.
                             * Wear very little (if any) make up.
                             * Avoid cologne or perfume.
                             * Drink plenty of water the day of treatment.
Q- Would Acupuncture interfere with any other treatment/service I am currently involved in?
A- I don't recommend starting more than one modality at the same time so that the results of one are easily identified.  Acupuncture does not interfere with other treatments, although I encourage separating modalities by at least one day to allow the body to balance and adjust itself.
Q- How often should I receive Acupuncture?
A- Treatments are generally one week apart with the exception of acute illnesses and Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture.
Q- What is happening to me during my session?
A- I will insert very fine needles (the thickness of 2 peices of hair) just under the skin.  Usually 4-8 acupuncture points are stimulated.
Q- What kind of training have you received to practice Acupuncture?
A- I have a Master's Degree in Acupuncture and am nationally certified in Acupuncture.
